Crypt of Terror #17

Crypt of Terror #17

Welcome back and today I am reviewing the first comic released for the Crypt of Terror (Later known as Tales from the Crypt) series, numbered 17.

Nothing Like a fresh grave
Death Must Come! Inspired by the  1945 Film The Man in Half Moon Street this story deals with a man who has found the secret to staying young and enlists the help of his good friend Henry. The trick is to replace a specific Gland, which needs to be taken from a fresh corpse.

Once again we have an interesting tale that ultimately revolves around grave robbing. I was mildly amused by this story, not the scariest, but intriguing.

Spoiler Alert!!!
Frederick continuously removes glands and eventually reverts to murder to obtain this precious gift. Well finally when his clock is ticking he begins the operation on a child only to re veil that the spleen (containing the gland) has already been removed. Now we get to see Frederick wither away to nothing.

The Man Who Was Death! Would be adapted into an episode, the pilot episode, for Tales From the Crypt (HBO). The story revolves around Edgar Bowman the Executioner at the States prison and his pleasure with dealing deadly justice. Well, the state decides to remove the death penalty much to Edgars dismay. So naturally he decides to go out and become judge, jury and executioner in any fashion possible.

I really enjoyed this story and there is a perfect twist at the end, as there always seems to be. I would highly suggest both this story and the HBO adaptation.

Spoiler Alert!!!
After a long and successful killing spree Edgar is apprehended and just in time for the death sentence to be reinstated. ironic don't you think?

Alibi On Ice Damn just when I thought I didn't have to deal with a text story. Anyway the story is about a state trooper who finds a dead body that appeared to have been in a bad skiing accident. Long story short it turns out the ski resort owner killed the guy and set up the body to appear like an accident. There I saved you 5 boring minutes, avoid this story/

The Corpse Nobody Knew

This mystery story surrounds a couple who comes to a hotel to get away from the city life for a weekend, but little do they know that they will stumble across a corpse in the closet! Did I mention that the husband is a detective so naturally he sets out to solve the murder.

I have to say that this story did not catch my attention and I found it rather boring. This is your basic murder mystery, no real supernatural elements but there is your typical twist.

Spoiler Alert!!!
It turns out the hotel owner is actually the murderer and has taken the identity of the deceased. Nothing too special.

Tell-Tale Marks
Dammit Dammit Dammit, I am going to make this very fast. A man calls the police to report a death. The man in question seemed to die by snake bite, well guess what its all a set-up as the caller was actually the man who killed the recently departed. So the cops figure it out and he is taken downtown.

The Curse of the Full Moon!
A werewolf story, so naturally I like it. Once again this is more of a pyschological story that deals with the perception of becoming a wolf versus reality. The main character, Ralph, who had been trekking in Europe when he gets scratched by Wolfs-bane, a plant that transforms its victims into the dreaded werewolf! Ralphs cousin George is trying to help him deal with the bad news but soon there are reports of animal attacks and people being murdered around town.

I always enjoy a good werewolf story and can appreciate the twist at the end of the story.

Spoiler Alert!!!

In the end it is revealed that Ralph has been hypnotized into believing he was a werewolf, all the while George has been killing the people. The story climaxs with George admitting this betrayal and attacking Ralph as he screams, "I AM THE WEREWOLF!!!"
